Okay... I had an entire introduction planned for this car. Then I realized... IT'S AN SL65 AMG. If you know... YOU'RE ALREADY LOOKING FOR YOUR KEYS. And if you don't know? Allow me about 30 seconds to ruin every other SL you've been shopping for.

6.0-LITER. BI-TURBO. V12. That's it. That's the ad. We can all go home. Actually, no. Because Mercedes-Benz apparently decided a luxury convertible needed a hand-built twin-turbocharged V12 producing 604 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque. IN 2005. Read that again. 738 LB-FT. In a two-seat Mercedes roadster. Because apparently Germany was completely unsupervised in the early 2000s.

THIS IS NOT AN SL500. Not an SL55. Not an SL with AMG wheels. SL65 AMG. The big one. The ridiculous one. The one Mercedes built for the person who walked into the dealership and said: "What's the most unnecessary version?" THIS.

AND THIS ONE HAS 47,507 MILES. Not 147,000. FORTY-SEVEN THOUSAND. Silver. Gray interior. And the condition? DEAD NEW. You don't have to squint. You don't have to use your imagination. You don't have to listen to somebody explain that "it's really clean for the year." NO. IT'S CLEAN. Period.

THE LAST OWNER DIDN'T JUST OWN IT. THEY PAMPERED IT. Service. Care. Condition. Preservation. This thing even came to us with its CAR COVER. PUT THE TOP DOWN. Now you're cruising. Quiet. Comfortable. Classy. Silver Mercedes. Nothing to see here. Then your right foot moves approximately three inches. OH. THERE'S THE V12. This is the kind of car where the passenger asks: "Why are we going this fast?" And the driver responds: "I BARELY TOUCHED IT."

2005 WAS A DIFFERENT TIME. Mercedes wasn't downsizing. They weren't asking how many cylinders they could remove. They weren't putting giant screens where the dashboard used to be. They took their flagship roadster... Stuffed a twin-turbo V12 into it... Sent it to AMG... And apparently nobody in accounting had the courage to stop them. THANK GOD.
